Ambition is defined as an ardent desire for rank, fame, or power. Marcus believes that in order to be a
successful businessman or businesswoman, one must be ambitious. He also believes that one must be able
to lead but, at the same time, listen to others' opinions. Marcus possesses both traits.
Marcus is a member of the Student Government at William Howard Taft High School, where he has seen,
first-hand, what it takes to make a successful leader. He is also a member of Young Black Scholars,
where he is surrounded by ambitious young people who have dreams of changing the world.
Marcus has always dreamed of owning a business, and when his mother, Carmen Hawkins, first informed
him of the Youth Entrepreneurial Program at El Camino College Small Business Development Center, he
jumped at the opportunity to participate. He and his friend, Sedrathe Gillespie, recently started a party
assistance service, and Marcus saw the 2008 Summer Buzz on Biz Academy as a perfect opportunity to
gain more knowledge about operating a business.
After attending the Academy's orientation, his expectations were fulfilled. He believes that he can be a
great contributor to the program. He possesses many ideas and works well with others. He is an easy
going person who is easy to teach and relate to. By the end of the program, Marcus hopes to have gained
the knowledge and confidence he needs to take his business to the next level.
Marcus believes this program will greatly help him learn how to start and run a successful business.
